Local community praises Beekman Group’s Go Green recycling campaign

Mrs. Josephine Brookes of Izotsha on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast said that “the recycling depots providedย  by the Beekman Group, The Fever and Signland is a wonderful initiative! We make use of the Shelly Beach depot on a weekly basis, as it is really very convenient placed on the Shelly Beach Boulevard. The depot is always clean and tidy, and the recycling bins are emptied
regularly, and we are grateful to the Beekman Group for making recycling so easy!” The depot at Shelly Beach, as well as the second recycling depot behind the Harbour View Centre in Port Shepstone, both have the facilities for the recycling of glass, ink & toner cartridges, plastics, aluminium and
paper.

Samantha Podmore, the Beekman Groups Marketing and PR Executive, said that “the Go Green project was envisaged as a company- and district-wide recycling program that would mobilize the community with the aim of minimising the impact that we all have on the environment. To see the local community respond so positively to our public recycling depot is very rewarding, and it has justified the efforts we have made thus far, and we would like thank all the media, our partners and the community for their support they have given us in making this project a success”.

One month alone, (April 2011) saw the two recycling depots make possible the saving of 82 831 litres of water, 28 459 kWh of electricity, 10607 litres of oil and the equivalent of 53 trees. When multiplying these quantities month after month, it soon becomes apparent the amazing contribution to the environment that these recycling depots are making.

The Beekman Group has also been instrumental in encouraging local schools along the KZN South Coast to become more involved in the recycling process, with the joint donation of specially marked recycling bins to the participating schools from the Beekman Group, Coca-Cola, The Fever, Ugu Municipality and Hibiscus Municipality. This project encourages and educates the children on the importance of recycling and its benefits to the environment.

The Beekman Group, South Africa’s largest and most successful vacation industry company, has also implemented a host of other eco-inspired initiatives as part of its Go Green project. According to Podmore, “the campaign as a whole looks to inspire people to participate actively towards the improvement and preservation of the environment. At Beekman House, our KwaZulu Natal South Coast headquarters, mini recycling depots have been established on each floor, as well as a larger recycling depot in the basement. Additionally, other eco-friendly practices which have been implemented at the head office include geysers fitted with timing switches, the use of more energy efficient hydro boilers and LED lights, regular feedback on the quantities of recycled material collected, the use of biodegradable detergents and cleaning products as well as recycled paper for everyday printing needs. It is amazing how a big difference can be made with a relatively small shift in attitude, and with minimal effort and cost”.
